Trish Milburn

How to make Your Plot, Characters and Setting Come Alive

A book that truly leaps off the page and makes readers feel as if they are living inside the story weaves together interesting plots, three-dimensional protagonists, and settings that are so alive they seem like characters. This workshop explores ways to make sure all three aspects of your story work together to create an experience that readers will not only enjoy but also will insist others must read.

Stepping into Research for Writing Historical Novels

Writing historical novels, from biographical fiction to romance, requires research. The amount of research one has to do depends upon the story—the feel, the texture, the language, and the amount of world-building. Bestselling author Vanessa Riley believes a reader needs to be transported when reading novels based in history. This session will cover how to get started and the questions every writer needs to ask when approaching historical stories.

Panel Discussion
The Importance of Voice in Fiction
The discussion will examine one of the most important elements in writing—voice. It will touch on ways that voice affects how the material is read and received and what elements make up voice. The panelists will consider how voice impacts other story elements, including character and plot. They will read selected passages from their own fiction to illustrate the different ways voice can be developed.

Our practice will employ the craft of lineated poetry and traditional narrative, including attention to language, syntax, and sound; rhythmic or imagistic patterning; repetition; precision; compression. The intersection of poetry and prose offers a range of possibilities for style and subject. We will write together and discuss poetic elements as we practice writing. No previous writing experience is needed.

Robert Fieseler

Truth or Truthy? Factual Reporting to Elevate Your Nonfiction Story
Limited to 10 Attendees

How do you rebottle lightning, recreate the magic of a moment without “poetic license,” or making up the best stuff? Enter the journalistic skill of reporting, through which nonfiction writers dig up evidence and use research to construct a working narrative of things that happened. It’s all about fashioning from the infinite reality of the past a fact-check-able story that informs the reader and delivers “emotional truth,” a.k.a. literary goosebumps. Not just credible but beautiful nonfiction. And vice versa.

Robert W. Fieseler, a multi-award-winning journalist and book author, will run this masterclass workshop as a conversation between colleagues. In nonfiction, we all face the same challenges. Starting with a live writing exercise, we’ll then consider strategies and tips to build up our reporting chops. Finally, we’ll workshop the pieces of two volunteers from the angle of delving deeply into reality and bringing more truth into truthy spaces. Bring your memoirs, your family histories, your autobiographies, your literary journalism, your reportage and your PhD monogram histories. All nonfiction welcome. Each participant is encouraged to submit a nonfiction piece to Robert between 1000 and 1500 words by Monday, Nov. 7th. You should also indicate if you would like to volunteer to be one of the two workshopees. Email your submission to Robert at Wordbobby@gmail.com

Vanessa Riley

Author

Vanessa Riley is an award-winning author of historical romance, mystery, and fiction novels featuring realistic multicultural communities and powerful persons of color. To fuel her interest in the Regency and early-Victorian eras, she made time for attending renaissance fairs and consuming period novels and films while obtaining her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and a master’s in industrial engineering and engineering management from Stanford University, as well as a BS and MS in mechanical engineering from Penn State University. A frequent speaker at literary, women's, and STEM events, she lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her military husband and teenage kid. Visit her online at VanessaRiley.com.

Chris Crutcher

Author, Therapist

Chris Crutcher was raised in Cascade, Idaho, a lumber and cattle ranch town located in the central Idaho Rockies, a two-hour drive over treacherous two-lane from the nearest movie theater and a good forty minutes from the nearest bowling alley.  In high school, he played football, basketball and ran track, not because he was a stellar athlete, but because in a place so isolated, every able bodied male was heavily recruited.  “If you didn’t show up on the first day of football practice your freshman year,” he says, “they just came to your house and got you.  And your parents let them in.”

His early interest in stories came principally from reading Jean Shepherd and other fine authors in the Playboy Magazine delivered monthly to his house because, as he overheard his father saying to his mother, “Some of the very finest contemporary American literature graces the pages of that magazine.”  Full disclosure, there is justified suspicion that he may have perused some of the photography before settling down to serious reading.

Crutcher’s years as teacher, then director, of a K-12 alternative school in Oakland, California through the nineteen-seventies, and his subsequent twenty-odd years as a therapist specializing in child abuse and neglect, inform his thirteen novels and two collections of short stories.  “I have forever been intrigued by the extremes of the human condition,” he says, “the remarkable juxtaposition of the ghastly and the glorious.  As Eric ‘Moby’ Calhoun tells us at the conclusion of Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, ‘Ain’t it a trip where heroes come from’.”

He has also written what he calls an ill-advised autobiography titled King of the Mild Frontier, which was designated by “Publisher’s Weekly” as “the YA book most adults would have read if they knew it existed.”

Chris has received a number of coveted awards, from his high school designation as “Most Likely to Plagiarize” to the American Library Association’s Margaret A. Edwards Lifetime Achievement Award.  His favorites are his two Intellectual Freedom awards, one from the National Council for Teachers of English and the other from the National Coalition Against Censorship.

Five of Crutcher’s books appeared on an American Library Association list of the 100 Best Books for Teens of the Twentieth Century (1999 to 2000).  A recent NPR list of the Best 100 YA and Children’s books included none of those titles.  Time flies.

Crutcher no longer listens to, nor contributes to, NPR.
