In 1600, the fires of the Inquisition are raging throughout Europe but in England, the laws and theology have combined to light a fire of their own: the hunt for witches. Rose Gilbert hears voices. Recognized today as the illness schizophrenia, the Physik who tries to cure her calls the illness Furor but the Puritans call it witchcraft.
The Witch's Voice, a novel of historical fiction, is set in 17th Century England. The medicine, laws, superstitions and real-life personalities of the time impact not only the characters' lives, but help define future attitudes, laws, and even medical vocabulary today.
Decor/Costume
I will be wearing a costume typical of women's dress in 17th century England, the setting for The Witch's Voice. As a volunteer at the Castillo de San Marco in St. Augustine, Florida, I regularly speak on medicine in various time periods associated with the fort. This outfit is reflective of the English period in St. Augustine.
My booth will consist of a six -foot table and drape with books.
